Diversity in Blogging
I thought this assignment was really fun, I had no idea that blogs were
used to express such a myriad of factors. The biggest issue I had was
that some of the websites like Twitter required you to create an
account, otherwise all that was publicly available to read was the
homepage .I don't like creating accounts for a lot of webpages because
most of the time I forget the password or my login information and the
whole experience takes longer then it should. I had two favorite
websites that I found; http://www.opendiary.com/ and http://womenonthefence.com/.
I had my daughter a year ago and I wish I had known about the
womenonthefence website because it has helpful posts relating to new
moms which cover topics anywhere from how to set a sleep schedule to how
to bring down a fever. I think it is really awesome that websites like
this exist because I had a lot of questions and it would be create to
just go online and read advice from fellow moms who are either
experiencing the same problems or have already experienced them. The
opendiary webpage was really humorous because people are just so open
and honest about issues going on in their life. I think blogging is good
for schools in the fact that students are able to find particular blogs
that appeal to them and the more they do that the more they read, and
these days it is a struggle to get students interested in reading. On
the other hand, a lot of blogs disregard spelling and punctuation so the
more a student reads those words and sees that punctuation the more
likely they are to use the same and that just creates more problems in
their writing. Although opendiary and twitter are enjoyable websites, I
would not necessarily consider them quality blogs. I think a quality
blog has substance to the actual text and conveys a message, but a lot
of blogs on opendiary just serve as a forum for people to communicate
the struggles in their life, in other words they just serve as
complaining modules. The tone of voice a blog uses is dependent on the
type of blog being read, so for fashion blogs the jargon used is related
to the fashion industry. Corporate blog websites like http://www.compendium.com/
are used to relay a business message or history, basically to get the
word on a company out to the general public. Corporate blogs are more
professional then personal blogs, which makes a lot of sense. I noticed
that most of the blogs I read are not particularly long, and I think
that is because a lot of people do not read like they used to, but
rather they skim to find the main points. Blogs are condensed so that
people can quickly find the answers or main topic they are looking for
without having to read a lot of material. My favorite blog so far was http://womenonthefence.com/2012/05/22/the-race-to-have-it-all/. I found Erica to be a really thoughtful writer and the topic intriguing.
